Fantastic Caverns
If you’ve driven through the Midwest, you’ve probably seen one of many billboards for Fantastic Caverns. The cave was found in 1862 by farmer John Knox whose dog chased a rabbit into a small opening in a bluff. In 1867, Knox invited the community to view the space, and members of the Springfield Women’s Athletic Club were the first to brave the journey underground. The 12 women are considered the first cave explorers of Fantastic Caverns, and guests can still see their names on the cave wall.
Today, explorers can take a 50-minute jeep-drawn cave tour led by tour guides. If you’d like to visit, you can learn more here.
